Changed Awareness QFC 21st of May

Extracts from today’s reading

Blessing to move on with

TA mi lubadh mo ghlun
An suil an Athar a chruthaich mi,
An suil a Mhic a cheannaich mi,
An suil a Spioraid a ghlanaich mi,
     Le gradh agus run.

Doirt a nuas oirnn a flathas
Trocair shuairce do mhathas;
Fhir tha ’n uachdar na Cathair,
     Dean-sa fathamas ruinn.

Tabhair duinn, a Shlan’ear Aigh,
Eagal De, gaol De, agus gradh,
Is toil De dheanamh air talamh gach re,
Mar ni ainghlich is naoimhich air neamh;
Gach la agus oidhche thoir duinn do sheimh,
Gach la agus oidhche thoir duinn do sheimh.

I AM bending my knee
In the eye of the Father who created me,
In the eye of the Son who died for me,
In the eye of the Spirit who cleansed me,
     In love and desire.

Pour down upon us from heaven
The rich blessing of Thy forgiveness;
Thou who art uppermost in the City,
     Be Thou patient with us.

Grant to us, Thou Saviour of Glory,
The fear of God, the love of God, and His affection,
And the will of God to do on earth at all times
As angels and saints do in heaven;
Each day and night give us Thy peace.
Each day and night give us Thy peace.

May Forest Church 23

Quartz Forest Church gathering 21st of May 2023

After the excitement of Easter this months forest church gathering is going to be a chance to practice things like “Forest bathing” and #SensingSpirituality, especially #SensingAwareness

Please join us at 2pm outside the Crichton chapel to spend time outdoors #SensingSpirituality

Please read on for more thoughts about what we are attempting to do.

The estate is full of many people doing this in their own way. Activities like Walking the dog or playing football are a normal part of peoples daily routine. You don’t tend to think of the benefits of them, or even seek them out each time because you hope that they will be beneficial. The habits are simply part of a healthy lifestyle like taking a bath to clean your body.

Every now and then though we become aware of just how good it is to be in a place. The way the mist hugs the trees, or the light shines on a drop of water or the experience of a particularly good match that you watch or play in can stand out and create a changed sense of awareness. Not only do you enjoy the moment, but you also become aware of the specialial-ness of it. These memories become treasures and help you form your identity and sense of self. They can be a reservoir of resilience when it’s chucking it down with rain and you don’t have the energy to hope for an enjoyable walk.

Take a moment and compare this with your experience of services in church, if you have any. For some the smell of the place, the flow of the poetry in the words, being with people and singing of thoughts through song becomes physical feeling of sound harmonised with the building and belief.

I was there when he set the heavens in place,

when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,

when he established the clouds above

and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,

when he gave the sea its boundary

so the waters would not overstep his command,

and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

Then I was constantly at his side.

I was filled with delight day after day,

    rejoicing always in his presence,

 rejoicing in his whole world

    and delighting in mankind.

Proverbs 8: 27 – 31

Do you recognise who is speaking in these words?

Learning #SensingAwareness can be a process of learning to recognise the “Voice”, in unfamiliar places – or perhaps in familiar places too!

So this Sunday we will spend time doing the normal activities of meeting, walking, together in a park, talking, eating, and drinking; and they will become special.

Look out for a special Midsummer events – A Labyrinth at Caerlaverock castle, Forest Church on Wardlaw hill

Easter Sunday Forest Church

Gathering by the water to eat fish and share stories

A shingle beach leading down tot he river Nith
Where the River Nith meets the Cluden water at Lincluden

This Forest Church experience was set up to provide participants with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the gospel stories where the disciples meet with Jesus at the waters edge, and share fish roasted over coals with him.

This is a popular spot for people to gather and enjoy swimming in the river. It is a short walk from town, but the scrub woodland and ruined Abbey provide a boundary to create a sanctuary of wild space hidden right next to the A75. Easter was early enough in the year for us to be sharing the beach with only one other group though – and dog walkers.

Those who came brought food with them as well. We shared the fire and enjoyed discovering what everyone had brought. As we sat and cooked we took it in turns to tell sections of the story of Easter. Starting in the upper room where Jesus gathered with his disciples to break bread and drink wine. The stories were interlaced with reflections and songs. The story wove its way through time until we met it again in a shared experience of sitting by water and enjoying the sharing of food and drink in the presence of Jesus.

As a mark of the day some people chose to cast a cross in a simple soapstone mould. In itself melting the metal, purifying it with fire and then watching it take the shape prepares for it, can be a symbolic and heartfelt action. The cross which is cast then needs cleaning and can be carried as a reminder and connection to the experience throughout the year.

Reforesting

This article is from 2019, but is shows what an artist (with help from their sponsors and friends) can do. It is a story of finding hope in reforestation.

This is closer to home, in England and Wales. “A Rocha” work internationally as well.

And at a Scottish level this page has some info and resources from the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Forest Church, Mothering Sunday

I wonder what your experience of mothering is?

Or how many various experiences both positive and negative contribute to your understanding of what mothering and motherhood is?

How does that relate to husbandry?

As Quartz Forest Church we have been meeting in a very managed estate for over a year now. The grass is mown, the flowerbeds weeded and it is as well managed as a family offered up for a morning service in their Sunday best clothes.

Even in the most pristine and culturally conservative setting though, verses from the bible challenge the status quo. The rich and respectable are warned that it is the poor and marginalised who more often recognise the prophets. Those who lead armies are reminded that the king of the world won through mounting a cross and in dying fulfilled the promise of creation. Even in the texts there is a wildness that challeges human rationality. An earthy humour that pokes fun at us when we elevate our religion to an untouchable status and make it sterile.

Likewise, even within this managed estate, whether that is described as husbandry or mothering, there is an uncontrollable energy. We will take time out this Sunday to look for the deep green and echoes of wild vitality. We will pause to sense ways in which the landscape reminds us that we are participants in our relationship with the rest of creation. Even though we shape the landscape, our environment also shapes us.

Please join us at 2pm if you are near Dumfries, or send comments from wherever you are in the world!

The next Forest Church gathering for April will be on Easter Sunday

FC feb 23

This Sunday we were blown further afield than usual by the wind. We revisited the wood on the crag behind the Crichton. The wind had a slight chill to it, laden with water, but the sun shone on us giving moments of warmth.

We look at the Horizon but it isn’t there, not really, it is just the furthest we can see. We know that there is something beyond it, and sometimes this mixture of knowing and not knowing is what draws us on beyond our present experience.

As usual we enjoyed a mixture of silent appreciation, discussion, and shared thoughts.

February Forest Church

#SensingSpirituality outdoors

We will be meeting up as Forest Church this Sunday.

We meet outside the Crichton chapel at 2pm. We will greet each other in Christs peace, then take some time out to explore and practice #SensingSpirituality.

Please dress according to the weather, bring a folding chair if you are worried about standing up for too long. The Crichton isn’t a physically challenging landscape, and we usually end up sharing a snack and a drink together in the central cafe afterwards.

This Sunday will be a relaxed and informal event, but those who have taken part regularly have found the rythm of meeting and actively developing a spiritual discipline very helpful. This year we will also focus on a few big events, starting with Easter.

See you on Sunday, or get in touch for more details!
