Whithorn Trip Details 2023

Please dress for the weather and rough surfaces. Parts of this trip will have limited access to toilets and other facilities, but it is a low level walk through a wood and along the beach. Approximate timings are given for those who will link up at various point along the way.


A reminder of our planned timings
(If you are traveling independently this is when and where to find the group.)
9 ish meet up outside St Johns (6 Newall Terrace, Dumfries, DG1 1LR) where we can see how few cars we can take.
(The journey is about 140 miles round trip, an average car will use about £20 of petrol or £60 at the IR expenses rate of 45p please be generous to the one who does the driving)
9.30 Head off into the west.
10.30 Barcaple Outdoor centre. (Barcaple, Castle Douglas DG7 2AP)
Hopefully leave some vehicles and pick up the minibus.
11.30 arrive at the Whithorn trust. (45-47 George St, Whithorn, Newton Stewart DG8 8NS)
There the trust will open specially for us, and we can have coffee and see the exhibition, with a discounted entry fee (£2 because some things won’t be open).
Bring a packed lunch, or forage for sandwiches in the local shops.
13.30- ish Drive 2 miles to the car park (St Ninians Parking DG8 8JU)
13.45 Walk down to the cave.
This is a walk on a path through woodland, and along a stony beach. There are no facilities at the car park or cave. Please dress for the weather and rough terrain.
Camera, sketch book, pockets for nice stones, short prayers, readings, and poetry might all be useful.
16.00 Back at the St Ninians cave car park
(If the weather is too cold we may spend less time on the beach and go to the Isle of Whithorn to warm up and visit St Ninians chapel)
17.00 Barcaple
18.00 Dumfries
